A day in the life of one of our Senior Account Executives - Sean Deans

Having graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Ancient and Medieval History in 2018, Sean briefly worked for a marketing insights company in London before joining the emotive PR & Advocacy team (formerly Spink) at the beginning of 2019. Sean is heavily involved in the public health side of the team and co-leads the public affairs activity. We caught up with him to find out about his virtual working day       

How would you summarise your responsibilities?
Within the PR & Advocacy team, I help manage client campaigns, including executing, reporting and evaluating activities. I co-lead our public affairs activity, conducting stakeholder and political engagement across the UK and mainland Europe to drive policy development. My role also involves asset development and management, devising national and international media strategies for trade and consumer audiences, and writing thought leadership articles and articulating best practice insight on behalf of clients.

Where are you currently working from? Talk me through your working day.
I operate from my new home in Haywards Heath. Having recently bought the place (my first house), working from home has actually allowed me to settle in and "live" in it, which has been a nice bonus.
Some people in life are morning people - I am not one of them, so I have been waking up at 8 am most days to maximise the morning lie-in. Following a quick shower, breakfast and the obligatory coffee (thank you, Dolce Gusto), I get cracking with work. First up is going through emails to ensure any outstanding matters are addressed. I then divvy up my day in accordance with our priorities, working on whatever needs doing. I don't necessarily have a set format for when I do certain types of work, which I like as it keeps my days varied.

What part of your day or your role do you love most at emotive? 
My favourite part of the day is lunchtime, of course. My favourite part of the role is helping shape policies and campaigns that directly influence and improve people’s lives.

A lot of our work involves European medical societies; why is this important to you?
Through their research and expertise, European medical societies help spearhead innovations within the healthcare space and deliver the diagnostic tools, treatments and management techniques of the future. We get to support them in this endeavour - if that doesn't spur you on every day, then I'm not sure what will!

What three words would you use to describe your job? 

Dynamic, rewarding, hectic!

Outside of work, how have you kept yourself busy during lockdown?
Home workouts and runs have been the order of the day alongside bingeing the odd tv series. Getting my house in shape has also been a big focus.

What are you most looking forward to when we get back into the office?
The morning catch-ups, the office conversations, being able to quickly brainstorm with the team - I'd say having your colleagues "there" with you is the biggest thing.

Do you have any book or show recommendations for us?
TV-wise, I'd recommend Frasier - I've been rewatching the boxset on DVD and it's up there with the great life purchases. The show was huge in the US and never really took off in the UK, but I think it's great.

Book-wise, I’d recommend Ian McEwan's Atonement - it’s the story that sticks with me the most.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
 "Cut the BS!"
